Connection Between Skin and Earth
Pencil, Prisma Color, and Sharpie on Mix Media Paper
5” x 10”

“Our skin is what stands between us and the world”
- Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses, p. 68
Statement:
After reading this quote, I instantly visualized the design of a finger smashing or touching the world. I feel like this piece helps switch perspectives to understand that the little things they do can affect the big things. Whether that can be applied to climate change or other social issues, is up to the viewer.

The Bond Between Earth and Soul
Prisma color on Mix Media paper
10” x 8”

“Hair deeply affects people, cab transfigure or repulse them. Symbolic of life, hair bolts from our head. Like the Earth, it can be harvested but it will rise again.”
- Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of Senses, p. 84
Statement:
In a lot of cultures, hair is seen as the connection to Earth, the longer the hair the more connected to Earth that person is. With this piece, I drew my inspiration from those belief systems and expanded on them. I made the woman’s hair long and growing make into the dirt to symbolize the strong bond between Earth and soul.
