Art 21: Barbara Kruger

The artist I chose was Barbara Kruger.

Video link: Part of the Discourse

The two phrases I chose to describe her and her work, are available and selective special awareness. Availability was a concept she expressed great importance on at the beginning of the video. She wants art to be available for all kinds of people in all kinds of places. Selective spatial awareness has to do with the way she displays her work. She uses large places to display her work which adds to the gravity of its importance. Kruger takes her background in advertising to capture an audience and her love for archtecture to display it. The two phrases can cohesivly work together because how and where she displays her art.

Between Being Born and Dying

And Power of Words

In these exhibitions by Kruger, show her unique usage of archetecture to display her work. She believed that art shouldnt be exculsive to markings on a canvas. Her bold use of the room allows the viewer to look at the whole thing instead of bits and pieces. It draws the eye all over. The intended message behind art can be hard to find in most cases which can deture most viewers but Kruger puts it right in front of the audience. This can make her art more applying for diverse crowds. The bold colors and the powerful font adds a stylistic and alluring element to Kruger’s art.
